Pastorius Essays - Bass, Weather Report, Bassist, Word Of Mouth

Pastorius Encouraged by his father, a drummer and vocalist, to pursue a career in music, Pastorius learned to play bass, drums, guitar, piano, and saxophone while in his teens. As a result of a football injury to his arm, his ambitions were mainly orientated towards the drums, but he soon found work playing bass for visiting pop and soul acts. After backing the Temptations and the Supremes, he developed a cult following, and his reputation spread. In 1975, Bobby Colomby, drummer with Blood, Sweat And Tears, was impressed enough to arrange the recording of Pastorius' first album, and a year later Pat Metheny asked him to play bass on his own first album for ECM Records, additionally he worked with Joni Mitchell. But the most important stage in Pastorius' career came in 1976: joining Weather Report to record the highly influential Heavy Weather, his astonishing technique on the fretless bass and his flamboyant behaviour on stage consolidated the band's popularity and boosted his own image to sta r status. He established his own band, Word Of Mouth, in 1980, and they enjoyed three years of successful tours, while Pastorius himself recorded intermittently with some of the top musicians in jazz. However, Pastorius suffered from alcoholism and manic depression. In 1987, after increasing bouts of inactivity, he suffered fatal injuries in a brawl outside the Midnight Club in his home town of Fort Lauderdale. Pastorius was one of the most influential bass players since Charles Mingus, and extended the possibilities of the electric bass as a melodic instrument in a way which has affected many bassists since. Production Possibilities Example

Production Possibilities Example Production Possibilities – Coursework Example Production Possibility Frontier (PPF) attempt to describe the relationship between three important economic variables i.e. scar choice as well as opportunity faced by a nation. (Kaplan, 2002). While depicting how rationalization of scarce resources can be made while considering the opportunity cost, PPF can be either contracting or expanding therefore subsequently reflecting the economic growth taking place in such an economy. When PPF expands, it may be considered that due to better utilization of resources i.e. low opportunity cost, economy is growing. However, Production possibility frontier of a nation may contract or move inward under certain conditions. One of the primary factors due to which a nation’s PPF may shift inward is the depletion of the resources of that nation. Due to, wars, natural catastrophe such as Tsunami, Plagues, earthquakes etc., the resources of the nation deplete at the higher rate than the capital formation process in the economy. For example, wars may cause the depletion of labor force because majority of the employable population would be engaged into potentially non-productive activities which on one hand will not only reduce the labor required to exploit the resources but on the other hand would include majority of labor force into non-productive activities.Considering an example of a hypothetical economy which only produces one good or service, it may be important to note that when if the opportunity cost of producing such good or services increase, the PPF may shift inward too because it would be too expensive to produce such good or service. Under such conditions, the PPF of a nation may shift inward.Bibliography1. Kaplan, J. (2002). Scarcity, Choice and the Production Possibilities Frontier. Thomas Aquinas Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Thomas Aquinas - Essay Example He tried to merge the principles of Christianity with Aristotelian philosophy1. Summa Theologica and the Summa contra Gentiles were his greatest works. Because of his great contributions, he was referred to as the Doctor of the Church and was considered the greatest philosopher and theologian. Aquinas was born in Roccasecca in the year 1225 in his father’s castle. He began his education at an early age of five years at Monte Cassino. Later he joined the university where he was introduced to Maimonides, Aristotle, and Averroes, all of whom influenced his career in theology and philosophy. He decided to join the Dominican Order at the age of nineteen, which his family opposed fiercely. His brothers later took him back home before he could reach Rome. He has later held a prisoner in his father’s castle for one year for defiance. Theodora tried to persuade him to abandon his mission to no avail. As a result, the sister assisted him to escape in order to save the family’s name. On the 7th day of March 1274, he died while commentating on the Songs of Songs. Even though he was a scholastic philosopher, he never considered himself one and would criticize other philosophers and call them pagans. He criticized them for "falling short of the true and proper wisdom to be found in Christian revelation." For this reason, he developed a lot of respect for Aristotle and always referred to him as â€Å"the philosopher†. His work has had a major influence on Christian theology, particularly for the Catholic Church and extended to the Western philosophy2. He did a lot of commentary work on Aristotle’s works which include; Metaphysics, Nicomachean ethics and On the Soul. He believed "that for the knowledge of any truth whatsoever man needs divine help, that the intellect may be moved by God to its act.† He also believed that humans possess a unique and natural ability to know very many things without divine intervention from God.
